K12 Scholars Program
The K12 Scholars Program aims to recruit, train and retain a diverse cohort of clinical and translational science scholars dedicated to understanding and advancing the science of translation.
Overview
The K12 Scholars Program Career Development Awards provide up to $120,000 per year for scholar salary (excluding fringe benefits) for up to two years; up to $27,500 for annual scholar research and development support. The awards open to current or incoming early-career faculty members at BCM or UH within 5 years of their initial faculty appointment (please see below for more details on Eligibility).

PI/Co-I Eligibility
Status as an early-career faculty member at BCM or UH within 5 years of initial faculty appointment as of January 1, 2025
Hold a relevant terminal degree (e.g., MD, DO, DNP, MD/PhD, PharmD, PhD, DrPH, RN-PhD, or EdD) in a health-related profession or specialization.
Demonstrated evidence of scholarly productivity appropriate for the applicant’s career stage.
Exhibits a commitment to establishing a career in translational science.
Have not successfully competed as the PD/PI for a substantial career development award (e.g., NIH K23, K08, VA Career development award) or independent research award (e.g., R01).
Applicants may not have a pending K award or equivalent federal application at the time of appointment to the K12.
Scholars are expected to devote at least 75% of their total professional effort during appointment on the K12 (at least 50% for surgeons with prior approval).
Applicants with a dual appointment at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center will require an individual
consultation with CTPH K12 CDA program leaders to determine eligibility.Based on National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines, scholars must be citizens or noncitizen nationals of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment.

NIH Biosketch: Complete biosketches for the applicant, the proposed primary mentor, and each proposed mentoring committee member.
Specific Aims* (Limited to one single-spaced page)
Research Plan (Limited to four single-spaced pages)
Project Budget and Budget Justification (Use PHS 398 Form Page 4)
Letter of Support from the applicant’s proposed mentor
Letter of support from the department or college leader: The letter must include assurance that the applicant will have the required release time to devote at least 75% of total professional effort to the K12 program (at least 50% for surgeons with prior approval)
