K12 Scholars Program

The K12 Scholars Program aims to recruit, train and retain clinical and translational science scholars dedicated to understanding and advancing the science of translation.

The Consortium for Translational and Precision Health (CTPH) K12 Scholars Program seeks to promote the career development of early-career faculty members to become translational science leaders, emphasizing precision health. The CTPH K12 focuses on clinical and translational science, the field of investigation aimed at understanding the scientific and operational principles underlying each step of the translational process. Translational research focuses on the specific case of a target or disease/disorder, whereas translational science generates scientific and operational innovations that overcome longstanding challenges and roadblocks along the translational research pipeline. These include scientific, operational, financial, and administrative innovations that transform how research is conducted, making it faster, more efficient and more impactful.

The CTPH K12 program goals include:

  • Recruit, train and retain a cohort of clinical and translational science scholars dedicated to understanding and advancing the science of translation.

  • Provide a robust, integrated career development program, including protected time, mentored research training, core and individualized didactic curriculum, experiential activities, and networking opportunities for all scholars.

  • Enhance the value of the training experience through workshops and group-based activities, in which teamwork is essential for problem-solving.

  • Support high-quality, innovative mentored research that demonstrates how to incorporate clinical and translational science methods into research projects.

  • Provide didactic training in precision health and health principles that allow scholars to identify and address differences in social, genetic, behavioral, and environmental determinants of health through focused training and applied experiences in data science, dissemination and implementation, health and community/stakeholder engagement.

  • Optimize mentor-scholar relationships by requiring mentor and mentee training based on evidence-informed mentoring practices and active monitoring and assessment of mentoring relationships.

  • Develop scholars into a new generation of effective mentors for future clinical and translational scientists through didactic training and mentor skills development.

  • Integrate K12 scholars into the CTPH programs and services.

Amount

Up to $120,000 per year for scholar salary (excluding fringe benefits) for up to two years; up to $27,500 for annual scholar research and development support
